During their 65 years of activity, the Ballut Blocks group of companies have been at the forefront of the Maltese construction industry, constantly investing to produce the latest and most efficient concrete products and to acquire modern construction machinery. At the same time, using these very tools, the company also successfully engaged in a number of public, commercial and residential projects.

The manufacturing story started with the production of the renowned Ballut concrete block 60 years ago, following which the company went on to produce prestressed concrete beams, concrete roof panels and concrete pavers.

Through its subsidiary General Precast Concrete (GPC) Ltd, the company widened its line of precast products amongst which are Delta Beams, Twin Walls, 2 Way Spanning Voided Flat Slabs (slabs which practically eliminate concrete not performing any structural function from the middle of a floor slab thereby reducing structural dead weight) and precast bespoke elements designed according to clients’ specifications. GPC can also offer products which enhance the thermal performance of buildings and incorporate architectural features.

On the machinery side the company was one of the first to introduce a whole array of machines which reduced to a minimum what used to be hard manual work: cranes on trucks which delivered concrete blocks to a job site several storeys high, rippers behind bulldozers which allowed bulldozers to excavate rock, mechanical hammers which removed the use of most jackhammer work and piling machines which also removed the necessity to subcontract piling works to non-Maltese contractors.

All these products and equipment, together with Ballut’s experience and expertise have also been used with effect in a number of projects which were beneficial to the Maltese economy: participating in the construction of the airport runway in the seventies, the Kordin Grain Terminal in the eighties, the Tal-Qroqq Multi-level Junction in the nineties and in the recent Flood Relief project in Qormi and the City Gate Project in Valletta.

The company has also undertaken, on its own or in joint ventures, important commercial and residential projects. Examples of commercial projects are Actavis new warehouse, structural works at the new Farsons extension, the new EneMalta Energy Distribution Centre and Tigne’s commercial block. Important residential projects include one of the recent Pendergardens buildings, the Savoy Gardens apartments and the apartment blocks at Kappara Heights.
